UPMC Regional Neurocritical Care Conference
Neurocritical Care is a relatively new specialty taking care of a complex subset of patients with a wide variety of neurological illnesses, requiring collaboration across fields and up-to-date training. This educational activity will provide a wide variety of providers with the opportunity to learn about the total care of these patients and a few of the most common disease dealt with in a modern neuro ICU. In addition, it will showcase the breadth of UPMCs neurocritical care focus. We will begin with an address from the leader of UPMC's neurocritical care teams, Lori Shutter, MD. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a life-threatening illness with high risk of secondary neurological injury from cerebral vasospasm, and attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about this and ask questions of a multidisciplinary expert panel. Then, attendees will hear how to manage elevated intracranial pressure and how we choose osmotic agents and other therapies. Post-cardiac arrest care is complex and is changing frequently as we learn more about optimal temperature management in these patients. Attendees will learn the history and importance of brain death testing, how the neurological exam is performed, and strategies for apnea testing. Finally, attendees will hear from a neurosurgical team about optimal initial management of spinal cord injury, especially blood pressure control.
