Clinical Connections: Applying High Intensity Gait Training to Improve Walking Outcomes in Neurologic Rehab

May 14, 2024

While the physical therapist is primarily involved in development of a plan of care related to improving walking outcomes; across the continuum all professionals have a role in this goal. Many rehabilitation professionals incorporate walking into other rehab activities and patients/caregivers will often ask questions of multiple providers as it relates to their care in specific domains. Having all professionals involved understand the evidence, importance, and key contributors to improving walking outcomes is key to proving consistent care.

Target Audience

Nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, case managers, social workers, physiatrists/physicians, psychologists, fellows, and residents involved with rehabilitation are encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the presentation, participants will:
1. Discuss the key recommendations from the 2020 CPG addressing locomotor function in people with chronic stroke, brain, and spinal cord injury.
2. Identify the roles of specificity, repetition, and intensity in promoting optimal walking outcomes for people with stroke, brain, and spinal cord injury.
3. Apply the concepts from the CPG and principles of experience-dependent neuroplasticity to the evaluation and treatment of patients in the inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient settings
